Comparative Study on the Stress Response of Nurses Working at Psychiatric Ward and that of Nurses Working at general Ward


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the stress response of nurses working at psychiatric
ward (psychiatric nurses) compared with that of nurses working at general ward (general nurses) in
order to provide assessment data for the intervention of the stress response.
Symptoms of stress inventory was used to measure of stress response.
Data were collected by a direct survey method of questionnaire from march first to march both in
1995.
Zoo samples were selected from nurses working at 3 psychiatric hospitals and psychiatric ward from 4 university hospitals in Seoul and Kangwon province area.
Zoo samples were selected from nurses working at general ward from 2 general hospitals in Seoul. Nurses who had experienced more than one of in life events for the last 2 years were excluded from total number of samples, finally 161 samples from psychiatric nurses, 1.69 samples from general nurses were selected to analyze the data.
Score of total stress response, score of sos subscales, stress response by characteristics of socio-demography of nurses working at psychiatric ward were compared with those of nurses working at general ward.
The results of this investigation were as follows ;
1. The mean score of total sos of psychiatric nurses was 0.81 to 0.48 and that of general nurses was 0.90 to 0.53.
2. Mean score of peripheral manifestation, central-neurological symptoms, gastro-intestinal symptoms, muscle tension, habitural patterns, depression, anxiety, anger and cogenitive disorganigation of general nurses showed a tendency to be higher than those of psychiatric nurse. Mean score of cardiopulmonary symptoms of general nurses was significantly higher than that of psychiatric nurse.
3. Mean score of 16 sos items of general nurse was significantly higher then those of psychiatric nurses 16 sos items were those. Mean score of I sos items of psychiatric nurse were significantly higher then those of general nurse I sos items were cold hands or feet.
Mean score of 16 sos items of general nurse was flushing of your face. sweating excessively even in weather, thumping of your heart, rapid breathing, dry mouth, a choking lump in your throat. hoarseness. muscle tension in hands or arm, muscle tension in leg, working tires you out completely, severe aches and pain make it difficult for your to do your work, you suffer from severe nervous exhaustion, worrying about your health, feeling week and faint, you become so upset that you hit something. you arc unable to keep thoughts from running through your mind.
4. Stress response between psychiatric nurse and general nurse was significantly different by marriage, duration of work, position. accommodation. planning to move into another working site. working ward, education of psychiatric nursing.
